For experienced walkers and serious fitness enthusiasts seeking substantial physical challenges through Dorset’s most demanding terrain.

The Purbeck Way:

This 26-mile route passes within three miles of our park, offering day section walks or multi-day adventures. The western sections provide challenging elevation changes with 2,000 feet of cumulative ascent. The terrain varies from chalk ridges to wooded valleys and coastal cliff edges.

Hill walking opportunities:

Nine Barrow Down reaches 585 feet with exposed ridge walking and spectacular panoramic views across Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills. The ascent from Corfe Castle provides 400 feet of elevation gain over 1.5 miles. Ballard Down offers clifftop walking with steep gradients and technical terrain requiring proper footwear.

Navigation and preparation:

These routes demand proper equipment, including quality walking boots, waterproof clothing and navigation tools. Weather conditions change rapidly on exposed ridges. OS Explorer Map OL15 covers the most challenging routes. Mobile signal can be limited in valleys and remote sections.

For more information about challenging walks, pop into the Information Hut or check out our Things to Do guide.

Route 2 from our location:

The network passes 1.5 miles from our park gates via quiet country lanes. Eastbound routes connect to Poole Harbour waterfront (3 miles) and Bournemouth seafront (8 miles) with predominantly flat, traffic-free sections. Westbound routes access Wareham (12 miles) and Dorchester (25 miles) with moderate elevation changes through attractive countryside.

Traffic-free sections:

Significant off-road portions include the Castleman Trailway (16 miles of former railway line), Poole Harbour Quayside route and sections through Upton Country Park. These provide safe cycling for families with young children or inexperienced cyclists.

Touring possibilities:

Multi-day adventures are straightforward with our accommodation as your base. Daily distances of 20-40 miles allow comprehensive Dorset exploration whilst returning each evening. We provide secure cycle storage and maintenance facilities.
