Days OutThings to do

Dorset’s big names – think dramatic coastlines and postcard-perfect towns – get a lot of love (and rightly so). But if you’re the kind of explorer who likes to wander a little off the beaten path, you’re in for a treat.

Whether you’re staying with us at South Lytchett Manor or planning a spring or summer escape, here are some of our favourite hidden gems in Dorset that are well worth adding to your itinerary.

Tyneham Village – A Lost Village in Time

Tucked away in the Purbeck hills, Tyneham is one of Dorset’s most fascinating hidden treasures. Abandoned during World War II, this “lost village” has stood frozen in time ever since.

You can wander through the old cottages, peek inside the schoolhouse and visit the church, all surrounded by rolling countryside. From here, it’s a beautiful walk down to Worbarrow Bay – often far quieter than Dorset’s more famous beaches.

Drive time Approx. 35–40 minutes
A scenic drive into the Purbeck hills, with the final stretch on narrow country lanes. Well worth it for the sense of stepping back in time.

Chapman’s Pool – Wild and Wonderful

If you like your beaches a little wilder, Chapman’s Pool is a must-visit. Reached by a scenic (and slightly bumpy!) walk, this secluded cove rewards you with dramatic cliffs, fossil-rich rocks and a sense of real adventure.

It’s part of the famous Jurassic Coast, but without the crowds you’ll find at some of the better-known spots.

Top tip: wear sturdy shoes and bring a picnic – this is a place to linger.

Drive time approx. 45–50 minutes
Drive to Worth Matravers, then follow signs to the small car park. The last part is a rural track, followed by a walk down to the cove.

Knowlton Church & Earthworks – Mysterious and Magical

Ever seen a church built inside a Neolithic earthwork? At Knowlton Church and Earthworks, you can.

This atmospheric spot near Cranborne Chase feels wonderfully remote. The ruined medieval church sits within ancient henge earthworks, creating an almost mystical feel,  especially at sunrise or sunset.

It’s quiet, unusual and brilliantly photogenic. A real “how have we never heard of this?” kind of place.

Drive time approx. 45 minutes
A lovely drive through Cranborne Chase with quiet roads and open countryside, perfect if you enjoy a peaceful journey.

Sculpture by the Lakes – Art Meets Nature

Just outside Dorchester, Sculpture by the Lakes is a peaceful blend of art, water and beautifully landscaped gardens.

Wander around the lakes, discover striking sculptures tucked among the trees and enjoy a moment of calm away from busier attractions. It feels like stepping into a secret garden.

Children 14 years and over are welcome.

Ideal for: relaxed afternoons, art lovers and anyone needing a slow day.

Drive time approx. 35–40 minutes
An easy route via Dorchester, with good road access most of the way.

Kimmeridge Bay (Beyond the Main Beach)

Many visitors head to Kimmeridge Bay for fossil hunting – but explore a little further along the coastline and you’ll discover quieter rock pools, hidden corners and some of the best sea views in Dorset.

On a calm day, the water here is crystal clear. Grab your snorkel and mask and follow the snorkel trail, spotting wondrous marine life. On a breezy one, the waves are dramatic and exhilarating. Either way, it’s a gem.

If you’re visiting with children, rock pooling here is a brilliant low-cost adventure.

Drive time approx. 35 minutes
A straightforward drive through Corfe Castle and the Purbeck countryside, with a slightly steep descent into the bay at the end.

Blue Pool – A Colour-Changing Wonder

Tucked into woodland near Wareham, Blue Pool is famous for its ever-changing colours – shifting from green to turquoise to deep blue depending on the light.

With woodland trails, a play area and a lovely tearoom, it’s a fantastic option for families looking for something a little different. Dogs are welcome at Blue Pool.

Drive time approx. 25–30 minutes
One of the closest hidden gems—an easy and family-friendly drive.
